Steps to take after your property has been damaged by
a covered peril:
- Call your insurance carrier to report
your damage. A claims adjuster will contact you as
soon as possible.
- Take photographs of the damage and
DO NOT throw away anything until your adjuster has
inspected your property.
- You or your contractor may make
emergency repairs to prevent further damage to your
property. Waterproofing openings in the roof or walls
and removing water from wet carpet can significantly
reduce damage. Have copies of all receipts for emergency
work available for your adjuster.
Protect your personal
property from further damage.
- Separate items that may be cleaned
and/or repaired. If you have personal property coverage,
check with your insurance carrier before discarding
any items that you plan to claim as damaged.
- If your home sustained significant
damage and you are unable to live in your home, please
contact your insurance carrier to see if "loss
of use" is covered under your policy. If your
policy covers loss of use, keep all receipts associated
with temporary housing arrangements, meals, and miscellaneous
expenses.
- Regarding personal property, please
contact your insurance carrier to inquire if you have
"contents" coverage. If so, we will need
a room-by-room inventory of your damaged contents.
The adjuster will need receipts when available, brand
names, model numbers, ages, quantities, purchase price,
and place of purchase regarding each item. Having
all this information documented prior to the adjuster's
inspection should reduce the time of processing your
claim.
